Our society places much value on the rights bestowed on the individual under the Constitution. When those rights are violated, through discrimination based on race or gender, or when government authorities in groundless prosecutions and arrests hinder these freedoms, the law provides remedies for the injured parties as compensation and as a deterrent to future violations.
